| The National Office of Industrial Property also received and handled dozens of thousands of requests of holders of protection titles for renewal and amendment of protection titles. In 2000 and 2001 only the number of such requests stood at 3,694. Many holders of protection titles actively applied the protected subject matters in to production and business activities, primarily trademarks and industrial designs. Many products bearing protected trademarks became well known in Vietnam and in other countries. Many enterprises have dozens of protected trademarks and industrial designs, say the Vietnam Tobacco Company possesses 143 protected trademarks, the District 5 Food Company in Ho Chi Minh City has 58 protected ones and the Vietnam Milk Company has 23 protected trademarks etc among them there are trademarks that valued millions of US dollars (such as P/S toothpaste of Da Lan toothpaste).
What is noteworthy is that the number of applications by foreigners and protection titles granted to them made up for a fairly large proportion in total number of applications filed with National Office of Industrial Property and granted protection titles (around 50%). These are enterprises that have been doing business or will invest in Vietnam. Lots of foreign companies filed hundreds of applications for industrial property; for instance the Uniliver Company (Netherlands) possesses 696 protected trademarks. This is the evidence of their interests in the protection of industrial property rights and their confidence in the industrial property system in Vietnam.
As the result of the development of industrial property activities, the amount of industrial property charges and fees has increased. The collection and payment industrial property charges and fees were strictly carried out in line with provisions set forth by the Ministry of Finance. In 1993 the National Office of Industrial Property contributed 9,602 million VND to Government budget, in 2001 the amount four folded and mounted to 39,700 million VND. During 6 years from 1996 to 2001, the National Office of Industrial Property contributed to 144,687 million VND to Government budget from industrial property charges and fees.
Besides making use of protected industrial property subject matters in production and business activities, the holders of protection titles also transferred the right of use or the right of ownership over industrial property subject matters. This activity has recently well developed. From 1990 to 2001, the National Office of Industrial Property received 986 and 1,317 applications and granted 648 and 806 certificates for registration of license contracts of right of use and right of ownership, respectively.
